"Superman syndrome—the belief that you need to be everywhere at all times to save the day—is problematic for school leaders. As Dr. Rodriguez warns, it’s tempting for leaders to take charge of a project and push ahead without the participation or buy-in from their team. When Superman syndrome takes over, the short-term results may be positive, but can alienate your community in the long run. This behavior leaves those you work with in the dark, keeping them from valuable information and experiences that would otherwise help build a motivated, resourceful, and goal-oriented team."

One of my first summer reads of the summer was Jennifer Casa-Todd's Social LEADia. This book covers all of the angles to help educators and parents understand the critical role that digital resources will play in the success of our students. The book is broken down into the following three sections:

Why Digital Leadership Matters

What Digital Leadership Looks Like

How We Make Digital Leadership Happen In Schools

I. Why Digital Leadership Matters

The opening section of the book makes a clear case for why we need to be moving beyond scaring students (and their parents) about the behaviors they need to avoid in utilizing social media tools. Our job in schools is to help students create a digital identity that will help get them where they need to go. In addition, we need to support parents in our school communities develop a comfort level with digital tools so that they can also support their children.

Casa-Todd makes a clear case for the fact that we can no longer separate digital literacy from literacy and because of this those who wish to be considered literate need to understand how to use digital tools communicate and learn. In order for this to happen, we need to ensure that educators also have the necessary comfort level to support students in this area. She notes the following:

"So, for student to become successful, they need to be proficient in all literacies, not just the traditional ones we're accustomed to or with which we are comfortable...We need to help students see that their blogging texting and tweeting on social media is real writing."

In addition to students utilizing social media tools to communicate and create, it has also become the primary source through which many people get their news. With this in mind, we need to help our students understand the sources of the information coming at them. Casa-Todd cited a November 2016 Stanford University research study of 7,804 students found that "students have trouble judging the credibility of information online."

The final big reason under "Why" concerns supporting our students in finding balance in their lives regarding the use of digital devices/tools. Casa-Todd asks her students one important question - "Is your device helping you or distracting you?" She adds the following, "when I co-teach with teachers where cell-phone distraction is an ongoing concern, we explicitly make self-regulation a learning goal we assess."

If we do not lead our students to this sense of self-awareness then we will come up short of fulfilling their potential in this area.

II. What Digital Leadership Looks Like

This section of the book gives a number of concrete examples of how we can support students in finding meaningful online connections that will support their ongoing learning.

Resources like the Digital Human Library as well as Twitter hashtags like #GlobalEd, #EduMatch, #cblchat (for connections-based learning) are just a few of the resources that Casa-Todd highlights which allow educators to jump right in and start building their Professional Learning Networks PLN's) so they can model what this looks like for students to do the same.

Casa-Todd states the following regarding this topic:

"Remember, social media os defined as tool or platforms through which people can engage 'in a large-scale conversation, exploration, and opinion sharing' and 'create and share their own content.'"

A critical part of this equation is curation, the ability of students to find relevant sources of information and decide if they are reliable. If we are not providing opportunities for our students to locate and evaluate resources, then we are doing them a disservice in this area.

III. How We Make Digital Leadership Happen In Schools

The final section of the book looks at ways we can set up schools and classrooms that empower students to be digital leaders. Casa-Todd shares some very authentic ways that other teachers have allowed their students to gain experience with digital tools. She notes the following:

"It is important that we travel alongside our students on this journey and be mentors for them."

This mentoring needs to start early on in elementary school with teachers following the lead of some of the examples outlined in this section (i.e. classroom Tweeter, Instagrammer, and Snapchatter of the Day, or a rotating classroom PR team to update the classroom blog and social media accounts.).

Casa-Todd makes the point that allowing students to gain a comfort level in promoting all of the positive things happening in their classroom will help them build a great foundation for promoting other causes that they become involved in down the road:

"We need to consider the extent to which our students can create (or are already creating) a positive change and how that positivity can spread via social media."

As I mentioned earlier, this book is full of practical examples that will allow teachers to begin or deepen the depth of their students' engagement in utilizing digital tools for learning. There are also great discussion questions at the end of each chapter that will allow teams of teachers or entire school communities to read this book together in order to expand conversations in this area. Even if you are the only one in your school reading this book, you can connect with all of the other educators around the globe who are also reading it by going to the Twitter hashtag #SocialLEADia and sharing your insights.

In concluding this post, I will leave you with one final quote from the book:

"Social media and technology affect everything our kids do, so we need to stop teaching as if they don't exist."

If you are wondering where to start in this overwhelming area, Casa-Todd has given you a path...

Most of what we see on social media offers only one perspective.

One topic that continues to resonate with me following ISTE 2017 surrounds the misleading nature of social media feeds. What we see in the posts of those who we friend or follow are typically the highlights of their lives. People tend not to share the more mundane aspects of their lives, nevermind the negative moments. So given the fact that our lives are a series of peaks and valleys, we need to take the time to remind students of this phenomenon.

Think about your old photo album...

George Couros' great session on Digital Leadership reminded me of the process that used to be followed to produce and organize photos. Many of us have photo albums around the house from when we were younger. The albums contain only the best pictures from the photos that were taken and developed by our parents. They didn't throw in all those pictures that weren't good enough to take a slot in the photo album. What percentage of the pictures taken with a roll of film do you think actually ended up in the album?

We need to help our students keep perspective on what they see posted

There are so many articles referring to the links between student depression and social media. It is no wonder given the fact that students may not realize that social media feeds are typically a highlight reel of a person's life. Most people share all of their best moments on Facebook while keeping their low-points to themselves.

In her ISTE Keynote, Jennie Magiera highlighted this point while referencing a recent New York Times article by Seth Stephens-Davidowitz titled Don’t Let Facebook Make You Miserable. In the article, Stephens-Davidowitz discusses his work analyzing Google search data and how the terms people enter into the Google search bar are the polar opposite of what they are posting on Facebook. Here is one example he cites:

<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , "times" , serif;">On social media, the top descriptors to complete the phrase “My husband is …” are “the best,” “my best friend,” “amazing,” “the greatest” and “so cute.” On Google, one of the top five ways to complete that phrase is also “amazing.” So that checks out. The other four: “a jerk,” “annoying,” “gay” and “mean.”

The excerpt above, which Jennie highlighted in her keynote, also comes from New York Times article and it is something that we need to ensure all of our students understand. I have no doubt that many students look at all of the beautiful pictures that their peers are sharing on various social media platforms and then begin to feel that their own lives are inferior in some way. As educators, we need to ensure that our students have a balanced perspective.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

It's hard to believe that I am back in my office this morning and that ISTE 2017 is just a memory. There is a bit of a letdown that must be overcome, following four days filled with engaging sessions and conversations surrounding how we can continue to improve our classrooms and schools to ensure that our students are well-equipped for what they will face when they leave our doors. After being submerged in a sea of over 20,000 passionate educators for an extended period, there is no way to leave ISTE without a sense of hope for what is possible. The harder part is taking this overwhelming sense of optimism and translating it into quantifiable actions that will lead to real change.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">My biggest takeaway from this whirlwind experience was a reminder about the importance of personal connections. At a time when there seems to be more concern about the emotional and physical health of students than at any previous period in history, we need to provide safe places where kids can find their way and find their passions. <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Jennie Magiera's amazing keynote on Tuesday highlighted multiple examples of how caring educators can both enlighten and empower students.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">There is a lot more to talk about from both Jennie's Keynote and ISTE 2017. Thanks to all of my educational colleagues from around the globe for another heaping dose of inspiration!

The recent uproar about fidget spinners in schools has me reflecting about my recent post on the potential problems incurred by organizations that solve all of their problems through a strict adherence to the policy manual. While the United Airlines story was certainly an extreme case, I do think we miss out on some valuable opportunities when we just take a hardline approach and not engage in some constructive dialogue about other options.

While I am not sure how long the fidget-spinner fad will last, I do know that it will begin to fade at some point. I also know that there will be some new gadget or gizmo that will become the next hot item that our kids will want to have in their hands. Will we add that to our growing list of banned items or will we instead take the opportunity to have a constructive dialogue with our students.

When we jump to ban things, we fail to give our students credit for the fact that they are capable of discussing behavioral expectations. We send the message that we don't trust them and that we will need to step in to protect them from themselves. My experience has been to the contrary and I know that students can help us articulate how, when and where a fidget spinner or the next thingamabob should be used in the context of school. If we are wrong, we can always go to the ban as step two.

Missed Opportunities

It's funny, the first time I saw a fidget spinner was while walking through our middle school classrooms and one of the science teachers was making them with his students. He was excited to show me the spinner and talk about the science involved with his students. I wonder how many other science teachers took this opportunity?

A few weeks later, my 11-year old daughter purchased one at a local toy store and then we went home and looked on YouTube for some of the tricks that we could try with the spinner. It was fun to share that time with her and see what the kids were getting so excited about. As adults, I think it is important to get some firsthand experience with something before we make up our mind about it. We need to take an interest in their interests and not just brush them aside as trivial.

In the end, my daughter decided not to take hers to school because she did not see a time in her school day where the fidget spinner would be valuable to her. But the important thing was that she was able to make that decision for herself.

The best example of what can happen when we collaborate with our kids on things like spinners comes from the news segment below from Alabama where educators decided to build lesson plans around this item that has captured the attention of so many students. It is sad to me that the majority of headlines on fidget spinners were negative and that we did not see more schools and classrooms look at this as a chance to make meaningful connections with students.

Unless we are talking about a safety issue, we need to ensure that we are not invoking the centuries-old "ban reflex." Do we see problems first or opportunities?

A sub-headline from the Wall Street Journal's article about the recent viral incident aboard a United Airlines plane immediately had me thinking about some of the things we do in schools. The headline about the situation where a United passenger was forcibly removed from his seat for refusing to give it up was the following:

"Airline’s rules-based culture in spotlight after man was dragged off flight by law enforcement."

As I read through the article a few other lines had me thinking about what we sometimes do in schools. Feel free to substitute school for airlines and students for passengers wherever appropriate:

"Like most Airlines, United Continental Holdings Inc. follows strict rules on every aspect of handling its passengers... "

"Deviating from the rules is frowned upon..."

“Employees followed the policy,” said a person familiar with United’s executive suite.

On Wednesday morning, in an interview with ABC, United CEO Oscar Munoz called the event a “system failure” and said United hasn’t provided its front-line managers and supervisors with “the proper tools, policies, procedures that allow them to use their common sense.”

These quotes and the entire sad situation that played out on the United Airlines flight reminded me of the theme of chapter 4 of The Innovator's Mindset by George Couros. Chapter 4 is titled Relationships, Relationships, Relationships and the main point that George makes is the need to establish a culture of trusting relationships where employees feel empowered to make decisions that are in the best interest of the customer (students).
He goes on to explain the fact that this is not the individual employee's fault, but it is more of a leadership issue due to the establishment of a culture that does not trust employees to make common sense decisions.

Let's face it, we see a number of embarrassing stories from schools each year that are caused due to rigid compliance to an outdated set of rules. If we are truly interested in having learning environments where staff and students are comfortable taking risks and thinking outside the box then we need to revise these ridiculous sets of rituals. The following quote from George in Chapter 4 sums up the rationale for this shift perfectly.

"As leaders in education, our job is not to control those whom we serve but to unleash their talent. If innovation is going to be a priority in education, we need to create a culture where trust is the norm. This must be modeled at the highest level of the organization if we expect teachers to create the same culture in their classrooms."

We are involved in a discussion about a later school start time for high school in Burlington as we look at a possible change for the start time at BHS in the fall of 2018. I first wrote about the positive research on school start time in a post back in 2010 and referenced research from Minnesota from the late 1990's which referenced a change in the start time at Edina High School. The folks in Edina, at the urging of the Minnesota Medical Association, moved their start time from 7:30-8:30.

The result of this change led to the following (source University of Minnesota Center for Applied Research and Educational Improvement):

Students in Edina reported statistically significant less depression compared with two similar districts.

School counselors and nurses reported fewer students seeking help for emotional problems and somatic physical complaints.

92% of parents in Edina said their teenagers were “easier to live with”

Over the last 20-plus years, there have been a number of additional studies noting the positive impact that later school start times can have for teenagers. A number of these can be found here at laterschoolstart.net/case-studies.

While a later school start times is one accommodation that schools have made to support the health of their students, there are additional ways we can support our students in getting a full night's sleep. One of the other big issues for our students according to recent studies is the impact of extended exposure to blue light from electronic devices, especially exposure right before bed. The video below explains this phenomenon.

My issues on the topic of teen sleep are with those that want to throw out the research due to their perception that we are coddling students or that the blue light issue alone is the main culprit. We should continue to look at all of the research available to us and modify our practice based on this information. Maybe decreasing exposure to blue light and changing the school start time would be helpful? While we are at it, we should discuss the influence of sugary treats and caffeine-infused drinks on teen sleep patterns. There are a number of things we can do to support the physical and emotional health of our students. Why can't our solution be All of the Above?

While my intentions are mainly self-serving, I am also hoping that a few folks might catch a post that they missed.

Let's see how many weeks I can keep this up...Three weeks and counting...
By repurposing old school buses, the districts have created mobile learning spaces that can be moved around within a district so that all students have access.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Ripp goes on with some practical ways that we can deal with this dilemma and still encourage students to read over the summer.
Are we really doing things in our schools and classrooms that will prepare our students for the rapidly changing world that they will be entering? In the post Ziegenfuss references background reading on this topic ( Nancy Duarte's Illuminate and Alec Ross's The Industries of the Future). I agree with Ziegenfuss's on the fact that we should be continually asking the following:
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">"What other resources can school leaders and parents access to learn more about tomorrow’s economy?
