BPS Blog Update (Volume 9) - Helping Parents Support Summer Reading

Maybe it's because they have just finished two-legs of horse racing's triple crown (with the Kentucky Derby and The Preakness completed), but all I can think of right now is... 'Down the stretch they come!"  

 It is unbelievable that we  are under 20 school days left in our school year and will be into June next week. With this in mind, I wanted to share a great post from Pernille Ripp about helping parents support summer reading for their children. Pernille, a 7th grade teacher in Wisconsin, has some great advice for the parents of students at all grade levels in her post 
Parents – How to Help Your Child Love Reading Over the Summer.  I encourage you to share it with all of your parents in the closing weeks. New Keys to Literacy Blog and a Post on Behavior - BPS Blog Update (Volume 7)

It's hard to believe that we are under 60 days left in the school year. Before a rundown of the most recent posts on the BPS blog, I wanted to share two things. First, I wanted to pass along the new Keys to Literacy (KTL) Blog that has been started as a resource to help with our implementation of Keys to Literacy in the middle and high school. The Keys in Burlington Blog will feature posts from the KTL Coaches as well as links to resources and student work. 

For elementary staff, I wanted to pass along a blog post that Director of Special Education Louise D'Amato passed along recently. The post - Why Ignoring May Backfire: Positive Alternatives for Disruptive Behavior - was written by Jessica Minahan who has consulted with some staff in the district. Here is a brief excerpt from the article that counters what we have been taught to do in order to deal with some disruptive students.

"...we’ve been taught when a student wants attention and we give it to them, we might be reinforcing the behavior. But it is not that simple. When a student a student seeks attention in disruptive ways, it may be due to underlying distress or uncomfortable feelings, such as anxiety. Ignoring the behavior can increase anxiety or discomfort and subsequently increase the student’s behavior."

We've Passed The Midway Mark - BPS Blog Update (Volume 6)

Since the last update on January 3, we have cruised past the midway point of the year. In addition, the month of January was the busiest month of the year for the Burlington Blog with over 7,000 views.  It would be great to add some posts from sources that have not been highlighted yet this year.  Please drop me an e-mail with anything you would like have highlighted here. In addition, I would love to visit your classroom and share what you and your students are up to as I did with Mrs. Fitzpatrick's students at Pine Glen.

BHS Devil's Advocate Fall 2015 - BPS Blog Update (Volume 4)

The first edition of the BHS Devil's Advocate for this year just came out and I wanted to share a site that allows you to embed something in PDF form on your blog or website with ease. The site is Scribd and it is free to join. The thing I like about it is that the formatting is better than what you would get from embed code Google Drive.

A New Search Tool For You and Your Students - Burlington Blog Update (Edition 19)

The post below is actually a copy of a weekly e-mail that I send to our staff  to promote our Burlington Public Schools Blog which shares the great work going on across our school district. I also try to give a quick technology tip/resource that I think would be useful. It is the 19th post in the series.

 During the Google Summit in Burlington this past weekend, I stumbled across a new resource that I thought would be useful for teachers as they support their students in doing research. A new tool called Choosito, allows students and teachers to avoid inappropriate sites and also search by grade level and reading level.  The two options for searching on Choosito are a web search and a library search. The library search gives access to a growing number of sites that have already been vetted by other educators and the web search provides a broader search that does not bring up sites that would be inappropriate for a library.

Looking Back and Looking Ahead - BPS Blog Update (Edition 15)

The post below is actually a copy of a weekly e-mail that I send to our staff  to promote our Burlington Public Schools Blog which shares the great work going on across our school district. I also try to give a quick technology tip/resource that I think would be useful. It is the 15th post in the series.

With this being the first BPS Blog Update of 2015, I thought I would highlight a few statistics from the first half of the year. The BPS Blog was just short of 80,000 pageviews during the first half of the 2014-2015 school year.  Here's a quick review of the top three posts from 2014. 


The students stole the spotlight with two of the top three posts during the first half of the 2014-15 school year. Seniors Kristen Johnson and Cat Hoyt had the most widely viewed posts with Francis Wyman IT Specialist Ben Schersten getting the staff on the board with his post on Chromebook shortcuts.

The one thing that is certain is that all of these posts are worth revisiting!

Sights and Sounds of the Season in BPS - Burlington Blog Update (Edition 14)



As we head into our December vacation, there are a lot of fun things happening with Winter Concerts at all of our schools and various pre-break celebrations.
